How to Co-op in RIFTSTORM

Party up with up to three Weavers through Steam Lobby and invite codes—always online, built for PvE extraction runs.

How to Co-op

RIFTSTORM is built as an always-online co-op PvE experience. Squads of up to three players deploy together into missions, share encounter pressure, and extract as a group. There is no offline split-screen or dedicated solo offline mode in the design Confiction Labs and Agate have shown ahead of the planned August 11, 2026 Steam Early Access date. This guide explains how to form parties, share access with friends, and play co-op effectively once the game enters Early Access—or in the Steam demo (app 3212570) if you want to practice lobby flow early.

The embedded PAX interview on this page discusses co-op intent directly from the development team. For step-by-step code sharing, pair this article with Lobby and Invite Codes under the Codes section.

Platform and player count

RIFTSTORM co-op runs through Steam on PC. Each session supports one to three Weavers in the same mission instance. You can queue with two friends for the full squad experience, duo with a random third via matchmaking if available at launch, or potentially solo-queue into public groups—exact matchmaking UI may evolve during Early Access, but the cap of three concurrent players in a zone is fixed in current materials.

Because every player slot matters, role diversity among Early Access Weavers—Rook, Starling, Hertz, Botsy, and Caracal—has outsized impact. Three identical DPS picks may clear low Threat Levels but struggle when Rift Exposure Zones spike elite density.

Steam Lobby: the default party hub

Most groups will use Steam Lobby integration:

  1. Host launches RIFTSTORM and opens the co-op or social menu.
  2. Host creates a Lobby visibility setting—friends-only is recommended pre-launch to avoid strangers joining test nights.
  3. Friends accept Steam overlay invites or join from the friends list when the host status shows in RIFTSTORM.
  4. Host selects mission type, Threat Level, and starts when all ready slots are filled or the squad agrees to duo.

Steam handles NAT traversal for many home networks, but if a friend cannot join, verify both accounts own the game or demo, restart the client, and confirm neither player is stuck in a solo tutorial instance.

Invite codes for cross-time-zone groups

When Steam friends list invites are awkward—different online hours, streaming setups, or Discord-first communities—RIFTSTORM supports invite codes tied to lobbies. The host generates a code; teammates enter it in the join field. Codes expire when the lobby closes or the host leaves.

Full troubleshooting—code typos, region locks, full lobbies—is documented in Lobby and Invite Codes. Share codes only in trusted channels; public codes can fill your third slot with a random who may not match your extract discipline.

Hosting responsibilities

The host typically owns mission selection and sometimes zone instance creation. Good hosts:

  • Confirm squad Periapt readiness before max Threat runs.
  • Read briefing maps for extract routes aloud.
  • Set voice ground rules—callouts for elites, Lythogram picks, and extract timers.
  • Rotate hosting duties nightly so one player’s PC is not the permanent bottleneck.

Hosting does not grant loot bonuses in disclosed materials; it is a convenience role.

Squad composition basics

Early Access co-op rewards complementary kits:

  • Front line: Rook or another durable Weaver absorbs pressure near choke points.
  • Damage: Starling or Caracal deletes priority targets marked by the team.
  • Utility: Hertz or Botsy provides control, deployables, or squad buffs that keep extracts clean.

Flex picks matter more than tier lists in week one. Play what your trio enjoys, then optimize when Lythograms and Threat scaling expose weak links.

Communication wins extracts

Gunplay carries fights; communication carries missions. Minimum viable callouts:

  • “Elite spawning left” before aggro breaks your line.
  • “Lythogram B gives team shield—vote yes” when choices appear.
  • “Extract in sixty seconds—stop looting” when timers hit your squad threshold from How to Extract.

Discord or Steam voice is strongly recommended. Ping systems help if present, but voice resolves extract panics faster.

Co-op and extraction-lite risk

Failed extracts hurt brought weapons via Weapon Scarring, not necessarily your friends’ hub stash. Co-op failure modes include:

  • One player greed-looting while others stand on extract.
  • Revive attempts during zone collapse that down the whole squad.
  • Threat Level chosen by the host without consulting duo partners’ gear risk.

Agree on extract rules in lobby before deploying. Two yes votes to extract should override one player chasing a distant chest.

Demo co-op vs Early Access co-op

The Steam demo supports co-op lobbies for learning movement and basic missions. Demo rosters and loot tables may not mirror day-one Early Access exactly. Use demo nights to practice lobby codes and voice discipline, then expect to relearn Threat and Periapt pacing when the full Early Access build goes live on the planned August 11, 2026 date.

Accessibility and always-online requirements

RIFTSTORM requires an internet connection even if you solo-queue. Plan for server maintenance windows around launch week. If a squadmate disconnects mid-mission, mission design may or may not pause—prepare to cover their role temporarily or extract early to preserve loot on a unstable connection night.

Quick co-op checklist

Before your first Early Access session with friends:

  1. All players wishlist or own Early Access on Steam.
  2. Host tested lobby creation once in demo or on launch night.
  3. Squad read Getting Started for Weaver and Periapt basics.
  4. Codes channel ready in Discord for backup joins.
  5. Extract timer rule agreed—see How to Extract.

Co-op is not an optional bonus mode in RIFTSTORM—it is the primary way Confiction Labs expects you to experience PADDOCK Contingency missions. Master lobbies, codes, and callouts now; your Periapt grind will thank you after launch.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common RIFTSTORM questions.

How many players can co-op in RIFTSTORM?

Up to three players can co-op in the same online mission. RIFTSTORM is always online and does not support offline co-op.

How do I invite friends without Steam overlay?

Use lobby invite codes. The host generates a code; friends enter it in the join field. See Lobby and Invite Codes for details.

Can I play RIFTSTORM co-op in the demo?

The Steam demo (app 3212570) supports co-op for practice. Progress and tuning may differ from planned Early Access on August 11, 2026.

Does the host get better loot?

Disclosed materials do not grant loot bonuses to hosts. Mission rewards depend on Threat Level, zone completion, and successful extraction.

What Weavers work best in three-player co-op?

Complementary roles beat duplicates—pair a front line like Rook with damage and utility such as Starling and Hertz. Details in Getting Started.

Is cross-play supported?

RIFTSTORM is Steam PC at Early Access launch. Cross-play with other platforms has not been announced; check official updates after the planned launch.
