Weapon Scarring Guide

Weapon Scarring is RIFTSTORM’s live answer to extraction failure without full inventory wipes. Confiction Labs’ extraction-lite model shipped with Steam Early Access on August 11, 2026: you keep loot from successful extracts, but when you fail to extract, you lose unsecure mission gains and weapons you brought into the deployment return with a scar—one weapon mod replaced by a random negative modifier. Scarred weapons remain usable but weakened until repaired or salvaged at the Forge Center. Launch-week reviews confirm real penalties like increased spread, reduced damage, and occasional mods that can make shots deal no damage—painful on otherwise great primaries, but not a account reset.

What triggers a scar

Failed extracts—death timers expiring, disconnects in always-online co-op, or aborting without securing loot—apply scarring to inbound loadout weapons per official copy. You do not lose Periapt account nodes or erase Forge blueprint unlocks. The pain is personal: your favorite crafted primary comes home with a bad mod slot. Read How to Extract for timing, carrier weight, and squad callouts that prevent last-room wipes.

Partial success still matters: extraction-lite lets you bank loot from early exits even when you skip optional objectives—see launch impressions on ~15-second extract channels.

What scarring does mechanically (live EA)

One mod slot becomes a random negative mod. Other slots and base weapon identity remain—the gun is not deleted, just compromised. Reported launch-week negatives include:

  • Increased weapon spread
  • Reduced damage modifiers
  • Chance for shots to deal no damage

Scarred gear can be repaired or salvaged for resources at the Forge Center. Repair when the base weapon is top-tier on the Weapon Tier List; salvage when the negative ruins a synergy-dependent build.

Loadout discipline

Use Loadouts to split safe and gambit weapons:

Safe primary: reliable mod rolls you refuse to risk on experimental Threat pushes or Mythic farming reset loops. Gambit secondary or tech weapon: blueprint tests, elemental swaps for Botsy Going Viral, or precision tests for Caracal mobile ops loadouts. Never bring only one copy of your squad’s elemental coverage into Rift Exposure Zones if failure would leave the team neutral for a week.

Threat and zone risk curve

Higher Threat Levels increase reward quality and failure cost simultaneously. A trio running Threat 3 without voice comms from How to Co-op is how scarred metas begin. Match Threat to Periapt and skill floor; downgrade when learning a new Weaver from the Weaver Tier List.

Co-op responsibilities

Assign an extract caller in Trio Comps statics. When one player greed-opens a side room, everyone risks scarred inbound gear—not just theirs. Hertz tanks can stabilize retreats; Rook mines cover extract corridors; Starling should not burn Sustained Salvo during extract channel if it delays departure.

Repair, salvage, and Forge loops

After a scar, evaluate at the Forge Center: repair if the base is worth saving, salvage if the negative mod is permanently bad on a mid-tier base. Salvage returns materials for new crafts—sometimes cheaper than fighting a permanently bad negative. Keep blueprint duplicates farming on lower Threat while your main recovers.

Scarring versus Lythograms

Lythograms are in-mission and lost on failure anyway—scarring adds persistent gear damage atop that. Do not confuse the two when teaching new players via Getting Started. Lythogram spikes feel good mid-run; scarring hurts after the lobby returns.

Demo versus live EA

The Steam demo (app 3212570) teaches movement and co-op but may not mirror final scar severity—treat EA as the source of truth for economy. Confiction Labs warns of major system changes during Early Access; scarring rules could tighten or soften—watch Steam news after Armory-scale updates on the Roadmap.

Mental model for extraction-lite

Hardcore extraction deletes everything and ends sessions in rage quits. RIFTSTORM wants failed runs to matter interestingly—negative mods you can fix—while keeping Periapt compounding. Play accordingly: extract early when loot is good enough, not when loot is perfect.
